Bye, bye birdies

The last baby robin left last night - gives new meaning to "empty nest syndrome." But on a brighter side I can try to revive a dying fern and clean the porch of all the bird droppings!

When the weather cools down I'll be back out in the garden. Right now about all I do is water. It's too hot to be doing anything else. The deer have eaten all my hostas, the flower buds off of my lilies, geraniums, lantana, and have eaten the leaves of the weeping mulberry and my daylilies. My plan is to redesign this fall with deer resistant plants. I took a bike ride around Colonial Williamsburg and took note of their groomed and maintained gardens. Maybe next time I'm there I'll stop and take notes!

Why not plan a trip to Williamsburg and stay at the Mulberry Garden Manor? The water park sounds refreshing!!

And then there was one............

Yesterday the third baby left the nest..... and then there was one! The one baby left looks to be the smallest of the bunch but it is getting ready to leave too. It stands on the side of the nest and spreads it's little wings as if it's going to take flight. As I write this it has moved from the side of the nest into the fern. That is exactly what the third one did. Mom and Dad are still around. Every time I go outside they fly around my head. I'll really miss seeing them but the dogs will be happy - they'll be able to go outside unsupervised again!

Only two left

Yesterday I saw one of the baby robins jump out of the nest and hop across the driveway. Two down and two to go! According to the research I've done, the babies that have left will continue to be feed by their parents and typically they are all ready together. So I figure it won't be long before I'm baby birdless!

On another note my guests from last night went to the Shakespeare Festival last night at The College of William and Mary. They were extremely pleased. I have a current special running for those of you interested in joining the festival. Stay two nights, mention the ad and receive 10% off your stay. You have until August 1 so check it out! Call the ticket office at 757 221-2674. And make your reservations on line at the Mulberry Garden Manor.

Baby Robins / New recipe

I'm thinking any day now the babies will fall and/or jump out of the nest. There isn't a lot of room, especially when the parents are there too and yesterday one was out of the nest and on the ground. (Note three not four in the photo.)

I tried a new recipe this morning for Orange French Toast. The recipe calls for cinnamon bread and a market up the street has the best fresh baked bread. It was a hit - the plates were cleaned! It will become a regular here at the Mulberry Garden Manor!

Robins

What a difference a week makes! I can't believe the fast growth of the baby robins. They are growing right before my eyes. It's amazing. Lamb Chop has discovered them and unfortunately is showing Porter where they are. I'll have to watch the dogs very closely but I'm up to the challenge. Stay tuned for daily updates!

I'm looking forward to a busy weekend. Colonial Williamsburg was bustling yesterday - hopefully that will continue. The Farmer's Market is held every Saturday morning in Merchants Square. And the weather looks like it will cooperate! Come stay in Williamsburg for the weekend and stay at the Mulberry Garden Manor. We'd love to host you!

More baby birds

Wow! The baby robins are really starting to look like birds; eyes are open, feathers are growing, there is lots of movement and they are beginning to chirp when mom brings food. They are only six days old and according to the research I've done they have another 8-10 days before they leave the nest. It will be a sad day for me. Not only will I miss the entertainment of the birds but I'll have to spend money on another fern!

We still have rooms available this weekend. Why not take a trip to Williamsburg and stay at the Mulberry Garden Manor!
